The Difference between the First and the Last Child

Sometimes it feels like the family I grew up in is quite different than the one my youngest siblings are growing up in.

For example, when I was ten, I had a conversation with my dad along these lines.

Me: I have a headache.

Dad: Would an ice cream cone make your head feel better?

Me: Sure!

These days, I imagine conversations between my dad and my fifteen-year-old brother going something like this:

Ryan: My life is boring.

Dad: Would a trip to Europe make it better?

Tim had to work and save up enough money to buy his first car. His parents just bought his little sister (the youngest) her first car. grrrr.

Really, the list could go on (we're both the oldest and frequently hold gripe sessions) but I won't indulge myself :)

My mom always tells me that I got to grow up with siblings to play with and the younger kids get things instead. Although there are times when I get worked up about the differences, I'm not upset about the situation at the moment. And the whole Europe thing probably isn't really a possibility, just wishful thinking on my dad's part.

When I was 17 I wanted to go to a peaceful indigo girls concert with a friend... NO WAY. Jed was body surfing at Violent Fems concerts at 14. There were greater offences, but that one still burns.

Anyway, no one could stop me from ripping up the dance floor at Cyndi Lauper last week!

I feel the need to remind Vegasbabe that older brother and sister got to go to their first concert (Huey Lewis and the News) with the entire Brown family including their eight children. Still, Dad was worried about the song "I Want a New Drug". So cry me a river.

And I thought that middle sister, the one who is in Hong Kong (?) got to go see Guns and Roses. So it seems that it's not an older child younger child thing, but all a conspiracy against Vegasbabe.
